SUBJECT: Investment Opportunity: Mighty Buildings, Inc.

Upon concluding this week's research, I am excited to share an intriguing company that I believe is well-suited for the Anima Mundi portfolio  Mighty Buildings, Inc. ('Mighty Buildings' or 'the Company'). Based in Oakland, California, Mighty Buildings is a real estate development technology company that focuses on manufacturing affordable, sustainable homes through "additive manufacturing" or 3D printing. The Company exhibits characteristics aligning AMDP's three core values of social responsibility, environmental friendliness and profitability. Throughout this memo, you will find the following key points:

  1. An overview of AMDP's Core Investment Standards & Principles
  2. Mighty Buildings' background, product and alignment with AMDP's three core values
  3. Insights into the value of Mighty Buildings through industry appraisals
  4. My Recommendation to Invest and Reasoning for Investment

AMDP's Core Investment Standards and Principles

Triple Bottom Line: This is a modern framework for businesses that asserts that their priority should not only be the "bottom line" or profit but rather profit, planet and people (Miller).

  • Profit: What is the financial return the organization generates for its shareholders?
  • Planet: How does the organization in question impact the environment?
  • People: What level of commitment does the organization have to positively impacting society?

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR): The assertion that a business has "a responsibility to the society that exists around it" (Stobierski).

Social Enterprise: A business within the social economy that primarily aims to create social impact rather than generate profits for its owners or shareholders ("Social Enterprises").

Carbon Footprint: Represents the total emissions of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide and methane, produced by our activities. It is calculated by combining the emissions produced at each stage of a product or service's lifecycle. Reducing carbon footprints is essential to mitigate climate change, protect ecosystems, and ensure a sustainable future for both the environment and future generations.("What Is a Carbon Footprint?"; "Carbon Footprint Factsheet").

Overview of Mighty Buildings, Inc.

Background
Founded in 2017 and based in Oakland, California, Mighty Buildings operates as a private company with a workforce of 159 employees. The Company is a known among its peers as a trailblazer in the construction industry, revolutionizing the way homes are built through its development of 3D printing construction technology (Wiggers).

The Product

Mighty Buildings offers the Mighty Kit System™, a fast and efficient housing solution using 3D-printed panels. These lightweight, insulated panels are printed in a factory and arrive onsite ready for assembly, complete with interior and exterior finishes. Homes can be constructed in just four days, providing a quick, sustainable, and cost-effective alternative to traditional methods ("Mighty Kit System™").

A Focus on Environmental and Social Sustainability
There are two significant issues impacting the real estate development space: environmental impact and poor access to abundant, affordable housing. Mighty Buildings has developed a product and process that effectively improve both of these conditions ("Sustainability").

Environmental Considerations

  • Reduction of Emissions: The construction industry is responsible for 37% of global greenhouse gas emissions, but Mighty Buildings is working to reduce this impact significantly. Through their use of advanced 3D printing technology and sustainable materials, they have minimized waste and emissions. Their recent partnership with Honeywell introduced Solstice Liquid Blowing Agent (LBA), an insulation material with a global warming potential 99.9% lower than conventional foam. This innovation enhances the energy efficiency of their homes while reducing the carbon footprint of the entire construction process (Tyrer-Jones).
  • Minimization of Waste: Since its founding, Mighty Buildings has employed prefabricated panels made from 60% recycled glass. These panels are five times stronger than concrete yet 70% lighter, reducing material usage and lowering emissions related to production and transportation. The Company’s factory-based production method eliminates 99% of construction waste, preventing the 2-4 tons of waste typically generated by traditional homebuilding (Mighty Buildings; Wiggers).
  • Energy Efficiency: Mighty Buildings ensures that their homes are highly energy-efficient by incorporating insulation that enhances thermal performance. Their homes are designed to be zero-net energy capable, meaning they can generate as much energy as they consume through solar panels and other energy-efficient technologies. These innovations allow Mighty Buildings to reduce the environmental impact of construction while delivering durable, sustainable housing suited for various climates (Mighty Buildings).

Financial Outlook

The following financial indicators illustrate Mighty Buildings, Inc.'s significant growth potential over the coming years within the construction and real estate sector:

  • Market Valuation and Growth: Valuations have surged from $100 million in 2019 to $400 million in 2023, signaling strong market confidence and interest in their innovative construction technologies ("Mighty Buildings Company Profile").

  • Revenue Trends: Revenues climbed from $4 million in 2020 to $7.15 million in 2023, reflecting an expanding market presence and operational scaling. This consistent revenue growth demonstrates the Company's effective adaptation to market demands ("Mighty Buildings Company Profile").

  • Capital Raising and Investment: The Company has raised a total of $124 million since 2018 through strategic funding rounds, highlighting investor confidence in their potential to transform traditional construction practices with advanced technology ("Mighty Buildings Company Profile").

Industry Appraisals

  •  Prefab Review: Prefab Review commended Mighty Buildings for its cutting-edge use of 3D printing and robotics, noting that their process "eliminates the 3-5 lbs/square foot of waste involved in traditional construction." The review highlights the durability and sustainability of their proprietary Light Stone Material, which is described as "durable, lightweight, water resistant, fire resistant, frost resistant, and more thermally resistant than concrete." However, the review also points out that Mighty Buildings primarily targets builders rather than individual buyers, and the company's delivery is currently limited to California, which could restrict its market reach ("Mighty Buildings Review").
  • Fast Company: American business magazine Fast Company named Mighty Buildings one of the most innovative companies of 2024, praising its ability to quickly produce homes while significantly reducing waste and energy consumption. Their review emphasized the Company’s use of 3D printing in cutting construction times along with the integration of rooftop solar panels that helps make their homes net-zero energy.

Final Recommendation: Invest

Given Mighty Buildings, Inc.'s innovative approach and strong alignment with Anima Mundi Development Partners' commitment to social, environmental, and financial excellence, I advocate for an investment in this forward-thinking company. By channeling capital into Mighty Buildings, we have the unique opportunity to boost their capabilities in scaling operations and extending market influence. This investment is poised not only to yield substantial returns but also to amplify our impact on global sustainability practices, cementing our role as leaders in responsible and transformative investing.
